Seaborg Technologies

To streamline development of powerplants Seaborg has chosen the 3DEXPERIENCE platform

October 2024

Seaborg Technologies, based in Copenhagen, Denmark are developing nuclear technology to create an inexpensive, sustainable and safe technology that can out-compete fossil fuels and revolutionise energy markets. To further accelerate their work, Seaborg has decided to adopt the 3DEXPEREINCE platform as part of their development toolset, delivered by IPES A/S.

On this occasion, we interviewed Head of Engineering Timothy Ruscoe from Seaborg Technologies, who told us about their decision:

“Due to the complexity of reactor design and the interaction between different technical disciplines, there is considerable distribution of design and simulation data across different software tools. We hope to reduce this burden with the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. In addition, we are looking forward to continuing our close collaboration with IPES, who we appreciate as a responsive and understanding supplier that recognizes our business needs."

"Facilitating consistent data usage and transfer is important for our design work."

Our favorite tools are an integral part of 3DEXPERIENCE

Timothy Ruscoe says: "We have chosen to switch to 3DEXPERIENCE for several reasons."

"Firstly, we already as a company use ABAQUS and DYMOLA developed by Dassault Systèmes, for a great deal of our development work."

“ABAQUS has a broad functionality that is well suited to our applications, where we use the tool for structural mechanics and analysis of reactor components. Furthermore, the software is consistent with nuclear quality assurance standards.”

"We use these features in combination with inputs from other tools to guide our design work. For example, we also use DYMOLA for system modelling, to predict response to transients and assess parameters such as fuel and structural temperatures which are then fed into ABAQUS. In fact, we have a complete model of our design in DYMOLA which we use as a flexible plant model to inform our design work."

Timothy continues "These tools are quite integral to the work we do, and obviously with 3DEXPERIENCE there is the possibility to improve integration between our CAD and analysis tools, which is appealing as an opportunity to streamline design tasks."

"The 3DEXPERINCE platform provides the opportunity to pull everything from the same data source, rather than performing data transfers between different simulation tools and different specialists." explains Timothy Ruscoe

We value fast and competent support from IPES

"The second reason why we have chosen 3DEXPERIENCE is that we have very good experience with the team at IPES. We are impressed with the level and speed of support. IPES has always been very responsive in coming back to us and has solved the challenges we have had”.

“We have a good work relationship. That has also been an important parameter for us”. says Timothy with a smile.

The cloud solution gives Seaborg greater flexibility and easier access to there data

"The 3DEXPERIENCE platform we have provided to Seaborg is running on a cloud solution. This solution is becoming more and more popular among our customers" tells Henrik Bøgelund, CEO, IPES.

Timothy Ruscoe explains: "We have already seen some of the benefits from the cloud solution. The speed with which we got up and running, and that we didn't have to install any hardware or local servers, as we had to in the past".

"Then there is also the flexibility. The scalability is easy, and new users can be added as the business grows. And as I said before this makes it easy to provide new employees with the access they need."

Expectations for the future

Henrik Bøgelund: "We are in the process of putting together a plan that will allow Seaborg to fulfil their growth ambitions for the coming years powered by the use of PLM, engineering and simulation on the 3DEXPERINCE platform".

"I'm looking forward to testing the functionality and finding out how we can take advantage of the many possibilities."  Timothy Ruscoe ends the interview.

About Seaborg Technologies

Seaborg was founded in Copenhagen in 2014 by a group of physicists who wanted to curb Co2 emissions and put an end to energy poverty. Since the outset, Seaborg has worked on commercializing a Molten Salt Reactor because of its compelling safety profile and technical opportunities.
